Expanding Voter Access

Expanding Voter Access

We need to extend every opportunity possible to allow every citizen to vote. We’ve seen too many instances where active measures are being taken to strip this right away from active duty members and voters in marginalized groups, such as people of color, the elderly, the poor, and the sick. Kentucky has some of the most restrictive laws in the country regarding absentee voting, and there is simply no reason for it. If we can allow for some to vote early, we should allow all to vote early.

Same Day Registration is especially beneficial to younger voters age 18 – 30 and new residents. Studies have shown that the average 18 year old moves six times by the time he or she is 30 years old. Same day registration will not only help improve voter turnout in millennial voters, it will also serve as a way of helping newcomers to become interested and engaged in the politics of their new community.

I will also fight for early voting and for expanded voting hours. In the age of the Internet, cable TV, and social media, we should not be limiting voting access to just one single day from 6 am to 6 pm. Our current Kentucky voting operations and hours are antiquated.
